Determining Auto Coverage Amounts

Factors that Determine an Ideal Amount of Auto Insurance

The only person who can determine the optimal amount of auto coverage is you. However, there are several key factors to keep in mind when determining auto coverage amounts.

  • To keep insurance premiums as low as possible, choose the highest deductible you can afford.
  • Check what additional coverage or insurance programs you have that could apply towards accident or medical scenarios; you want to avoid duplicate coverage.
  • Know that the higher the deductible, the lower your cost of premiums. Check this against your ability to directly pay for an expense involved with that type of coverage (collision, theft, etc.).
  • Don't put yourself in a bad financial situation. Be realistic about what you can afford. Weigh your assets and future earnings potential with the risks involved with paying out-of-pocket expenses and/or lawsuits.
  • Assess your personal circumstances and environment. What are some common risks with your lifestyle or environment? Are you protected adequately in those areas?
  • Have a good idea of the value of your car, your lien-holder's policies, and the market value for a replacement.
  • Choose a reputable and financially solid insurer. Saving money on policies won't make a difference if the insurer goes into the red or doesn't pay off your costs.
  • Know your financial situation and your credit rating prior to speaking with an insurance agent.
  • Be informed about your governmental regulations and requirements for vehicle insurance coverage. Most states have an insurance commissioner that can accurately inform you of their requirements and your rights.

You will probably not be in a serious accident or collision, but statistics benefit the insurance company. After all, if everyone needed to use their policy, the insurers wouldn't be in business. Just be sure to balance out your needs with what is appropriate for you at that time. Do your research and make an informed decision.
