What’s in a Dental Plan

No matter how financially stable you are, it is likely that you cringe whenever anyone mentions the phrase "dental plan." Let's face it - it is frustrating and often overwhelming to truly find a great insurance plan. It is even more excruciating to think we pay a dental company to receive painful procedures. We constantly have to research companies, find the most affordable rate, and make sure not to go with a company that has had issues in the past.

Regardless of your hesitation, it is important to find out what's in a dental plan. Before agreeing to one dental insurance plan such as a PPO or managed care, keep the following questions in mind:

  • Will the plan cause me to have to change my current dentist?
  • What are providers selected for the plan? Are there enough dentists to choose from for me and my family?
  • How many patients in a given geographic area are distributed to dentists?
  • How likely am I to receive care if I need it immediately?
  • How does the program deal with emergency procedures?
  • How much of my premium is used for administration purposes?
  • What is compensation rate do the dentists receive?
  • What coverage do I have if I'm away from home?
  • What are the overall benefits within the package?
  • What coverage do I receive if I need a specialist's care?
  • Does the plan have a variety of participating specialists?

Are you just not satisfied with asking questions? There are a plethora of other alternatives, if you are looking for honest answers. Co-workers, friends and family are wonderful references. They will honestly tell you how they feel about a company and what experiences they have had in the past. This alone will tell you more than anything. Moreover, there is also additional consumer information on dental insurance plans online. Many websites will give you free quotes, and other useful material that you may need when deciding on a company.
